Mello grew up in the Wammy orphanage for gifted children located in the UK. While living there he became rivals with Near, a boy who was trained just as he was, to succeed the one known as 'L' next. One unfortunate day, L died and by that time the one who would be his successor was still unknown. Roger, who took head of the orphanage after the owner died suggested that Near and Mello work together on the Kira Case that was left unsolved after L's untimely death. Near agreed but Mello was outraged by this idea and left the orphanage to work on the case alone.

Ultimately, his goal was to find Kira first to prove that he could be more than just second to Near, but in time Mello helped Near out. Mello and his accomplice, Matt, did all they could to get any leads to further proving that Raito Yagami was in fact Kira and they relayed that information to Near. One night, as they succeeded in abducting a Ms. Kiyomi Takada, Matt was gunned down. Though regrettful, Mello went on with his plan as far as he could before he was killed himself.

Mello has no clue as to why he landed in Avoria or why he's even alive for that matter. He was pretty sure he felt his heart stop. Though currently, the main thing he's worried about is not having any chocolate on him.
